John McCain courted the religious right by selecting Sarah Palin as his Vice-Presidential candidate. McCain had little support within the Republican party and by selecting her he made a sort of Faustian bargain because the religious right still doesn't support him.
Many voters have reported fear of a Palin Vice-Presidency. In many ways she wound up a millstone around his neck.
We may find out if there was an effort to replace Palin which somehow went awry. Palin clearly puts herself first and is probably controlled by the Rove wing of the ongoing Republican conspiracy against democratic rule and Democratic rule.
Palin's nomination represented the weakness of the Republican coalition. Ron Paulists do not like McCain's glorification of empire and his economic policies offend them.
The numerous defeats and shocks to the Bush-Cheney clique have left Republicans in some disarray with many heading for the hills in the midst of economic and political crisis. No one wants to take responsibility for the financial and broader economic meltdown.
Neither McCain n0r Palin addressed the economic crisis in any meaningful way. Obama is guilty of the same neglect but he did provide some ideas which suggested a more beneficent policy with some tax cuts for the less affluent.
As for Palin it will be interesting to see if she continues to play the role of a Republican leader. With her many negatives I doubt it. They largely
freaked out the voters who found out about her and I can't imagine her
remaining in office with Democrats running more and more of national and Alaskan government.
